“Play is the child’s symbolic language of self-expression and can reveal what the child has experienced; reactions to what was experienced; feelings about what was experienced; what the child wishes, wants, or needs; and the child’s perception of self.”
― Garry L. Landreth, Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship
Child-centered play therapy offers an engaging approach to support children's emotional and behavioral development. In a safe, nurturing environment, children express themselves through play. This method fosters resilience, encourages problem solving, enhances communication skills, builds empowerment, increases self-esteem, and supports self-actualization.
Children's primary form of communication is through play. Children have not yet developed their abstract reasoning, which means they are unable to process behaviors and emotions the same way adults do. Children inherently have the ability to process and move through hard things through their play and expression, but sometimes need additional support to do so. Child-centered play therapy creates a safe space for children to better understand their world and how to navigate relationships, self-image, communication, and life in a healthy way.
